Burnout Rate by Specialty
Burnout rate = % of physicians reporting burnout or compassion fatigue symptoms in Medscape's 2026 survey (n = 15,000+). After-hours charting = average daily hours spent on documentation outside scheduled patient time.

Why Documentation Is the Top Driver
62% of burned-out physicians cite EHR documentation as their primary source of burnout — ahead of loss of autonomy (44%), lack of respect (40%), and insufficient compensation (38%). This isn't new. What's new is the acceleration.
In 2019, physicians spent an average of 15.6 hours per week on administrative tasks. In 2026, that number is 18.3 hours — nearly half a working week spent on charting, prior auth, and documentation compliance. For every hour of direct patient care, physicians spend 1.2 hours on EHR tasks.
The after-hours documentation problem — colloquially called "pajama time" — is worst in emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine, where patient volume is highest and documentation requirements per visit are most demanding. The average EM physician spends 2.8 hours per day charting after their shift ends.
The downstream cost is significant: the annualized cost of physician turnover attributable to burnout is estimated at $500,000–$1M per physician when accounting for recruitment, onboarding, and lost productivity (NEJM Catalyst 2025). At a national scale, burnout costs US healthcare approximately $4.6 billion per year.
What Actually Reduces Burnout
Data compiled from Medscape National Physician Burnout Report 2026, AMA Physician Sentiment Survey 2025, NEJM Catalyst 2024–2025, JAMA Internal Medicine 2024, Annals of Internal Medicine 2024. Burnout rates reflect self-reported burnout/compassion fatigue symptoms. After-hours charting estimates from AMA EHR Satisfaction Survey 2025.
NoPajamaTime eliminates after-hours charting.
AI scribe generates a complete note during the visit. When the patient leaves — you're done. No pajama time.
